Consultation on ambitious Wallsend plans to get underway
A consultation to help shape the future of Wallsend is due to get underway tomorrow (January 19).
From January 19, North Tyneside Council will be launching a consultation on its Ambition for Wallsend, a multi-million regeneration project for the town.
The creation of the Wallsend Masterplan was first approved in March 2022, with three key priorities at the centre of its development.
The masterplan prioritises making improvements to the quality of housing in the town by renovating poor-quality properties and building new homes, connecting residents to good jobs through further education, transport infrastructure and putting Wallsend on the map for employers.
Draft proposals include plans to transform Segedunum and better link it with the town centre, and improvements to the town centre public realm and pedestrian environment along the high streets and Station Road.
And now, following approval from Cabinet on November 28, 2022, a public consultation is set to get underway.
There will be four face-to-face sessions for residents, businesses or community groups to come along and have their say. These will take place at Wallsend Customer First Centre on:
- Thursday 19 January, 1pm to 4pm
- Wednesday 25 January, 4pm to 7pm
- Wednesday 22 February, 9am to 1pm
- Friday 24 February, 9am to 1pm
Cllr Carl Johnson, Deputy Mayor of North Tyneside, said: “We have always pledged to be a listening council, and want to create a Wallsend that our residents and businesses can be proud of.
“These are still proposals, and we are looking for residents, businesses or any interested parties to help shape our thinking of how we create a vibrant and connected Wallsend.
“We have a number of ways for people to get involved and have their say on our initial plans, so please come along to one of our events, or take part in the online consultation and let us know what you think.”
Funding is currently being sought for the Ambition for Wallsend through the Government’s Levelling Up Fund. A bid for £19m has been submitted and the Council are awaiting a response. So far, almost £2m of grant funding has been secured from the North of Tyne Combined Authority to fund measures including events, support for businesses, shop front grants and improved walking and cycling routes.
The council has also launched an online consultation alongside PlaceChangers, a local tech startup. This interactive consultation allows users to view and share their feedback on each individual project of the plans.
Full details of the projects and proposals under the draft plans can be found on the council’s website here. The PlaceChangers consultation will be available from January 19
Residents of Wallsend and the wider area can get involved in the public consultation at any time before the consultation ends.
The plans to regenerate Wallsend are part of the Council’s Our North Tyneside Plan 2021-25, which aims to build a better Borough, looking to the future and listening to residents and working better for them.
